Valtrex (Generic)

Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication prescribed to treat herpes zoster and genital herpes, which can also be used for cold sores.

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) should be administered orally according to your doctor's instructions. Do not stop the course without prior medical consult, as it may render the treatment ineffective. For better results, take the medication at evenly spaced intervals during the day.

The following common side effects may occur while your body adjusts to the medication: nausea, vomiting, headaches, lack of appetite, pain in the stomach, weakness or dizziness. If any of these effects persist or become bothersome, or if your condition does not improve in the course of the treatment, contact your doctor.

As Valtrex (Valacyclovir) may cause dizziness, avoid operating heavy machinery or any other activities that require mental alertness after taking the medication.

Contact your medical specialist if you experience any other side effects.

Notify your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: kidney disease, blood problems, or allergies. Elderly patients should use the medication with caution, as they may be more prone to suffer from side effects. Pregnant women should take the medication only if clearly needed and after medical consult. It is yet unknown whether Valtrex (Valacyclovir) can pass into breast milk.

Notify your medical specialist about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medications, dietary supplements and herbal products, especially cimetidine or probenecid. Do not start or stop taking medications without prior medical consult.

If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you have missed.

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) should be stored at room temperature between 59°F and 77°F (15°C to 25°C), away from light and moisture, out of reach of children and pets. Do not store the medication in the bathroom.
